Join us for a creative retreat at the DePaul Art Museum! We will have breakfast, a tour of the museum's "A Natural Turn" exhibit, lunch, and a workshop with local artist Elsa Muñoz! Flex those creative muscles and prepare for a new school year of creativity and vision.

We'll start the day with a tour of the current DPAM exhibit, "A Natural Turn." "[├óÔé¼ÔÇ╣├óÔé¼ÔÇ╣Featuring] the work of four artists María Berrío (Colombian, b. 1982), Joiri Minaya (Dominican-American, b. 1990), Rosana Paulino (Brazilian, b. 1967), and Kelly Sinnapah Mary (Indo-Guadeloupean, b. 1981), and centers on fictional female characters . . . Their works expose the intersection of our interior imagination and the exterior landscape, spaces in which pleasure and violence are simultaneously generated and entwined."

We'll close out the day with a workshop led by visiting local artist Elsa Muñoz. Elsa is a Mexican-American artist born and raised on the South Side of Chicago (1983). Muñoz credits her interest in both nature and healing to her experience growing up in an underserved and often unsafe community with little access to green spaces. Having to spend most of her childhood indoors led to the cultivation of a rich inner world in which she was able to find beauty and sanctuary. Muñoz writes, “Beyond any particular message in my work I'm always fundamentally seeking to call upon and transmute my earliest encounters with the natural world–imaginary encounters which filled me with wonder and longing.”

Elsa received her BFA in oil painting from the American Academy of Art in 2006. She's since had 8 solo shows including one at the National Museum of Mexican Art (2011) and at the Union League Club of Chicago (2016) along with several group shows throughout the United States. She was most recently awarded a SPARK grant through the Chicago Aritist's Coalition (2022) and the Helen and Tim Meier Foundation For The Arts Achievement Award (2019). Notable collections include the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago), North Park University (Chicago), and the private collection of Martin Castro, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights under President Barack Obama.
