Actuarial Curriculum

DePaul has three distinct undergraduate programs that will prepare you for an actuarial career:

  • The first program, offered by the Department of Finance in the Driehaus College of Business, is the Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in Actuarial Science. It aims to strike the optimal balance between solid quantitative skills and the development of business acumen.
  • The second program, offered by the department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Science and Health, is the Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science. It builds in-depth knowledge of actuarial mathematics and statistics and offers more flexibility.
  • The third program, also by the department of Mathematical Sciences, is the Bachelor of Arts/Science in Mathematical Sciences with a concentration in Actuarial Science. This is a very versatile degree that, beyond the core math and actuarial courses, has a large number of electives and allows you to customize it based on your unique interests.

Finally, the Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a graduate degree: the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Actuarial Science, that caters to career changers as well as students who would like to further their actuarial training, and which condenses a comprehensive actuarial curriculum in just two years.

Below you will find sample curricula for the afore-mentioned programs. Note that several substitutions are possible. For example, rather than taking MAT 150-2, you may opt to enroll in a different (but equivalent) Calculus sequence, or you may test out of some of these courses, which will allow you to take additional electives. For more information about each of these programs and their required and elective courses, please refer to their official DePaul websites or ask an academic advisor or program director.

Courses which will prepare you for actuarial exams or provide you with VEE (Validation by Educational Experience) credits have been clearly labeled in red. Please visit our Exams page to learn more about the preliminary actuarial exams and the corresponding DePaul courses. To learn more about which courses will provide you with VEE credits, please visit our VEE Courses page.
